2025 SIGGRAPH ART: The Earliest Preview Reviewing– Consuming “Sustainability”!!
The theme of SIGGRAPH 2025 is “Connecting Nature, Art, and Technology”!!!
How wonderful. Doesn’t it feel like the world is finally moving toward peace?
But take a closer look at the SIGGRAPH homepage. To summarize:
“Focus on sustainability while showcasing VR and AR technology.”
…Wait. Doesn’t that sound odd to you?
How can “sustainability” coexist with VR and AR, technologies that devour electricity and rare earth metals?
Aren’t they simply consuming the very concept of sustainability while proudly waving its flag?

Sipping Champagne While Talking About Nature
I can almost picture it: the director of this gallery, sipping champagne in a fancy Manhattan restaurant, casually saying,
“Nature is so important, isn’t it? Oh, I really must buy the latest gadget. The world is just so unequal.”
That scene is crystal clear. And yet, this attitude perfectly symbolizes the hollowness of SIGGRAPH’s current theme.
SIGGRAPH Was Different Before
There was a time when SIGGRAPH struck the perfect balance between criticality and technology.
It showcased technological innovation while also asking how it intersects with humanity, society, and nature.
But what about now?
The direction has clearly gone astray.
Serious Creators Cannot Stay Silent
If you want to showcase technology, then hold a tech trade show.
If you want to showcase art, then allow it to be critiqued and discussed as art.
Yesterday, I emailed SIGGRAPH organizers to ask if their theme had become too inconsistent.
What did I receive? A copy-and-paste reply straight from their homepage.
At that moment, I realized:
They are merely feeding off the legacy of the past.
They no longer hold any ideals or principles.
Conclusion: The Future of SIGGRAPH 2025
What kind of works will come out of a theme this unfocused, judged by equally unfocused jurors?
The answer is simple: works submitted without a solid foundation, yet still celebrated as if they deserve it.
This is the harsh reality.
Where is SIGGRAPH 2025’s vision of “connecting nature, art, and technology” actually headed?
If we truly want to face “sustainability,” we need to shatter the superficial themes and technological showcases and reclaim critical inquiry and meaningful questions.
Put down the champagne and start by looking in the mirror. That is, if you even have one at home.
At the very least, I will not apply for this event. I have determined that it is not worth applying.
